Large format printing refers to a printing process that produces graphics on a scale too large for most commercial printers. Most commercially available flatbed printers can’t handle larger projects —shops specializing in large format printing use state-of-the-art equipment that enables them to create high-quality results. You are invited to visit us in our SOHO print shop, where we would love to show you how we use large format printers to create all kinds of signs, banners, and other oversized items.
Digital printing involves your artwork being processed by a computer and then converted to a format that prints directly onto the surface of your product. Screen printing uses custom stencil (screen) creation. Each color requires a screen and applying thicker and multiple layers of ink to achieve the artwork detail.
Bestype’s digital printing doesn’t sacrifice image quality, and also yields faster output thanks to technological advancements, assuring that NYC artists and businesses are getting the most for their money, time, and talent. Bestype offers both large format and standard-sized photographic prints. Both of these options are available to be printed in stunning color or in black and white. The best file format are PDF files with crop marks and ⅛” bleed. For documents with multiple pages, it’s best to save the file in single-pages rather than spreads. CMYK color mode will produce the most predictable color.
This depends on whether your monitor is color-calibrated, such as Apple Macbooks and iMacs that were manufactured in the last five years. The other factor is the color mode being used when creating your file – using CMYK color will give you a more accurate representation. Finally, viewing your PDF in Acrobat Pro will give you the best idea of how it will print.
A proof is an opportunity for you to verify that the file we have is accurate and is what you intend to print. There are two types of proofs: “soft proof” and “hard proof”. A soft proof is viewable on your screen while a hard proof is a printed copy. The benefit of a soft proof is that it is fast and free, but it doesn’t show how the piece will actually look on paper. A hard proof requires additional time and cost but is the most accurate.
Paper weight is divided into two categories: Text and Cover. We offer Text weight from 60lb. Text, which is a thin paper, to 100lb. Text, which is a thick paper. Our Cover weight ranges from 80lb. Cover, which is a thin card stock, to 140lb. Cover, which is a very thick card stock.
Our Coated paper has either a Gloss finish or a Silk finish. Uncoated paper has no coating and therefore has a Matte finish, allowing you to see and feel the natural paper fibers.
“Camera ready” or “print ready” refers to files that are ready for print: they are sized to the correct dimensions, there are crop marks, there is ⅛” bleed, the images are at a 300dpi resolution, and ideally any line art is in vector format.
Color separation refers to the process of taking a color image and separating it into four color plates: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. The purpose of this is so that a CMYK printer can reproduce the image on paper or other substrate.
Pantone is a universal color matching system in which more than 2,000 colors have a corresponding number. Four-color printing uses cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to approximate a match to Pantone colors. In spot color printing, such as offset printing, letterpress, and screen printing, instead of using a combination of CMYK, the ink itself is mixed to match the Pantone color.
For most applications, the paper or substrate we are printing on is white and therefore it’s not necessary to print the color white. However, in special situations where we are printing on a color paper or a clear substrate, white needs to be printed. We have the capability to print with white ink on both our small format digital printers as well as our large format machines.
The most common sizes for catalogs and booklets are 5.5” wide x 8.5” high and 8.5” high x 11” wide. Outside of the U.S. the most common sizes are A5 and A6.
Brochures are usually folded and can be formatted for a bi-fold, tri-fold, or even an accordion fold with four panels or more. Common sizes are 8.5 x 11” bi-fold (17” wide x 11” high when open), 5.5 x 8.5” bi-fold (11” wide x 8.5” high when open), and 3.67 x 8.5” tri-fold (11 x 8.5” when open).
For business correspondence, the #10 envelope is most common, measuring 9.5” wide x 4.125” high. For greetings and invitations, A7 is most popular, measuring 7.25” wide x 5.25” high.
Popular sizes for postcards are 4 x 6”, 4.25 x 6” and 5 x 7”.
Postcards are usually printed on 120lb. Cover in gloss or silk finish. For those wanting a matte look, 120lb. Cover uncoated is also popular.
A standard size for notepads is 5.5 x 8.5” but can range from a smaller 4 x 6” up to a full size 8.5 x 11”.
We offer a wide range of book binding methods that are suitable for different uses. Saddle-stitching is a process where the sheets are stapled in the middle and then folded in half. This is best suited for books with fewer than 60 pages and where the quantity is 50 or more. In addition, since a single sheet folded yields 4 pages, the page count must be a multiple of 4. Perfect binding is a process where the cover is glued to the edge of the interior pages resulting in a soft-cover style book. The setup required for perfect binding is extensive so it’s most cost effective for 50 or more books. Finally, other binding options include metal wire binding and plastic coil binding. Both of these methods require holes to be punched along the side and a wire or coil to be inserted and crimped. Wire and coil binding are ideal of workbooks and manuals that need to lay flat and hold up well to heavy use.
We print digitally which allows our customers to print only what they need as opposed to printing in bulk and keeping materials in storage. This results in less waste and lower up front costs.
Due to the significant setup that book projects require, our minimum is $275. The actual cost depends on number of factors including dimensions, number of pages, color or b/w printing, paper type, quantity, and type of binding.
While standard book sizes like 5.5 x 8.5” and 8.5 x 11” are most common, we treat every order like a custom project. We’ve produced flipbooks as small as a business card, a portfolio book as large as 17 x 11”, and every size in between.
